About the Book |
|
LETTERS FROM THE FRONT LINES records the day to day life of our men and women in uniform, during a critical period in our nation's history. It is especially important in an era when network news has become more infotainment than solid news reporting. It is often difficult to discern what is really going on in Iraq and Afghanistan. Media will continue, and rightly so, to report on this war and future wars, but the current style or trend of reporting as entertainment (as opposed to reporting in depth), is disturbing. |

The concept that war letters are historical documents and as such should be preserved is not recent or original, in fact, the many collections from previous wars have led us to this book. Two unique aspects of this collection however are the dominance of email over hand written letters for communicating from the front lines, and the recent invention of "blogging". Both forms of communication are well represented in this book. |

During the writing of this book we also had opportunity to seek out insight on global events and to receive the collective wisdom of some of America's finest military minds. We are indebted to the former Chief of Staff of the Army General Dennis Reimer, U.S. Army Ret., Vice Admiral J.D. McCarthy, USN, Vice Admiral Robert Conway Jr., USN, Major General Kevin Kuklok, USMC, Ret., Brigadier General Mike Regner, USMC, and Colonel Dan Hokanson, ARNG, National Security Fellow at Harvard University. |
