![]() Letters from the Frontlines - Canada in Afghanistan This page is primarily addressed to those soldiers and their families who have served with the Canadian forces in Afghanistan. Duffrey Sigurdson's next book is also a collection of war letters, emails and blogs, these however, are from Canadian soldiers who have been fighting in Afghanistan. Please consider contributing your letters and emails to this important collection. It is difficult to convey to you how important it is to historians and scholars who will study this war in future years. Although your letters or emails may seem trivial and uninteresting, just the opposite is true! Your day to day observations of life at war are a part of our history and we need to preserve that history for future generations of soldiers, scholars and historians. For the author of this collection there are two compelling reasons to write 'Letters from the Front Lines - Canada in Afghanistan'. The first is to preserve important historical documents in the form of the letters and emails themselves. The second reason is that it allows the soldiers themselves to tell the story of Canada in Afghanistan. "Letters from the Frontlines - Canada in Afghanistan" is especially important in an era when network news has become more infotainment than solid news reporting. It is often difficult to discern what is really going on in Afghanistan. The letters and emails in this book will tell the story better than anyone else could tell it! |

The concept that war letters are historical documents and as such should be preserved is not recent or original, in fact, the many collections from previous wars have led Duffrey to this book and his recently released volume of letters from the American war in Iraq and Afghanistan. A unique aspect of the collections is the dominance of email over hand written letters for communicating from the front lines. Letters tend to live on in desk drawers and in attics for many generations, emails disappear within months of a soldier returning home. This is a great loss to future scholars and historians. "Letters from the Frontlines - Canada in Afghanistan" will play a small role in preserving these important documents for posterity.
